The Alaska Chapter of The Wildlife Society remains opposed per the reasons outlined in our letter. I am unaware of any correspondence, regulation, or policy that indicated the level of protection currently associated with the Dalton Highway corridor was meant to be temporary. Indeed, after 20+ years, I would expect this protection to be assumed permanent. Further, the proposed bill has not provided any funding for state, federal, and borough agencies to monitor the potential effects of off-road vehicles and snowmachines to wildlife and wildlife habitat resources. In summary, the proposed legislation does not ensure that the concerns we have described in our correspondence will be addressed. I appreciate your time and effort to consider our comments. You make several excellent points. I am familiar with the Dalton and must tell you respectfully that I support improved access from the Dalton. Current limitations are too restrictive, were not meant to be permanent, and fence off millions of acres from all but the most fit and resourceful among us. That puts increased pressure on the fewer and fewer areas available for enjoyment by multiple use folks that live in and visit our great state. I am one who would benefit from lockup. We have a plane on floats, wheels and skis and remote cabins and equipment to get as far from another human as is possible on this planet. Many are not so fortunate. We can do Dalton access right, address your valid concerns and still create incredible opportunities up north for those who are currently denied reasonable access. Thank you.
